Soccer has its ironic moments, and Cruz Azul has just had one of the most talked about of the year. Just when it had been named by Opta Sports as the best team in the world outside Europe, the Mexican club suffered a historic 7-0 drubbing by the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup 2025.

According to the latest update of Opta’s world ranking, La Máquina was rated with 86.3 points out of 100, placing it in 64th position in the world and as the best ranked team outside Europe. It surpassed clubs such as Flamengo, River Plate, Toluca and Palmeiras, being the best placed among Concacaf and Conmebol teams. This recognition is due to its title in the Concachampions 2025, its consistency in Liga MX and the fact that it was the club with the most points in the Apertura 2024 and Clausura 2025 tournaments.

But while Opta was spreading that prestigious fact, Nicolás Larcamón’s team was crushed by the Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field.

The final score was 7-0, representing Cruz Azul’s worst loss to an MLS team in its history.

The game was a nightmare from the first half, but got totally out of control in the second half.

Yeimar Gómez, Jesús Ferreira, Obed Vargas, Osaze De Rosario, Pedro De la Vega (scorer of two goals) and Nouhou Tolo were the stars of the U.S. attack.

Goalkeeper Kevin Mier had little to do against the Mexican team’s poor defensive response.

This defeat shocked the Cementera fans, who recalled painful moments such as the 4-0 defeat against América in 2019 or the 4-1 defeat against Monterrey in 2021.

What’s next for Cruz Azul?

Despite the setback, Cruz Azul maintains its qualification to the Intercontinental Cup 2025.

They will be looking to reach the final to face UEFA Champions League champion Paris Saint-Germain.

Coach Larcamón will have to get back on track quickly if he wants to remain competitive in the Apertura 2025.

In addition to preventing this defeat from affecting the morale of the team.
