Democratic leaders in the U.S. Congress called Saturday for a vote next week on a resolution to prevent President Donald Trump from going to war with Iran without the endorsement of Congress, following the attack launched by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic.

The opposition, which has a minority in both houses, accuses the Republican administration of failing to properly inform lawmakers about the operation and of launching a covert war without the authorization of Congress, which has the constitutional power to declare war on another country.

Jeffries, Schumer seek to limit Trump’s war powers

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called in a statement for the following:

That Congress resume sessions to vote on the so-called war powers resolution.

This would prevent Trump from going to war with Iran without prior authorization from the Legislative Branch.

That resolution was introduced earlier this week by Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna and Republican Thomas Massie.

Who opposes foreign interventionism, when rumors of an imminent attack against the Islamic Republic were growing.

The leader of the Democrats in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, demanded that the government report on the military operation against Iran.

He also requested that the Upper House also resume sessions in order to be able to vote on the war powers resolution.

Most Republican lawmakers closed ranks with Trump.

Like the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, who assured that “peaceful solutions and diplomatic channels” had been exhausted.

This is to curb Iran’s nuclear program.

For his part, Senate Republican leader John Thune justified the attack by asserting that Iran has posed a “clear and unacceptable threat” to the United States for years.

According to official sources, Secretary of State Marco Rubio notified seven of the eight members of the so-called Group of Eight of the attack in advance.

The Republican and Democratic leaders of the House of Representatives and the Senate are part of the committee.

The Pentagon also reported the operation to the Congressional Armed Services Committee once the bombing was underway.

The United States and Israel on Saturday launched an attack on targets in Tehran and other cities in Iran, which has responded by launching missiles into Israeli territory and U.S. military bases throughout the region.
