The city of Denver (Colorado) implemented an Executive Order Thursday to protect residents from the constitutional “overreach” of U.S. President Donald Trump‘s immigration raids, allowing its police to intervene in cases of excessive force committed by immigration agents.
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, a Democrat, signed the order that also requires Denver law enforcement to protect peaceful demonstrators protesting or documenting immigration operations.
Denver tightens limits on federal agents

The provision establishes the responsibility of Denver police and sheriffs to intervene in cases of use of force likely to cause death or serious bodily injury by federal agents in immigration raids.
In addition, the Police will document the activity of immigration agents.
This will be done through body cameras and will investigate complaints and possible infractions during immigration operations.
No municipal agency will share its databases or technology use agreements with the Department of Homeland Security and its immigration agencies.
The head of the City Council also prohibited federal immigration agents from accessing municipal facilities during their operations.
Unless there is a court order.
“Our police and legal teams will defend civil liberties and, if necessary, intervene to protect the lives and safety of our residents.”
Said Mike Johnston in a statement.

Denver Police Department Chief Ron Thomas said his agency has a duty to intervene and investigate all incidents in which members of the community are harmed in immigration raids.
For his part, Denver District Attorney Miko Brown warned that his office will defend the rights of residents “regardless of their place of birth.”
The executive order comes after immigration raids in Minneapolis resulted in the deaths of two Americans last month.
