Eduardo Verástegui returned to the center of the public conversation after openly criticizing Gloria Trevi for expressing her support for Bad Bunny and his performance at the Super Bowl LX halftime show.
The Mexican actor and producer considered it inappropriate for the singer to use the nickname “San Benito” to refer to the Puerto Rican artist, a nickname that several followers have popularized on social networks.
The controversy was ignited on the afternoon of Sunday, February 8, when Trevi posted a message on her X account (formerly Twitter) celebrating the participation of Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio in one of the most watched sporting events in the world. Her publication did not go unnoticed and provoked an immediate response from Verástegui.
Gloria Trevi’s message

In her tweet, the “Pelo suelto” singer expressed her enthusiasm for the Puerto Rican singer’s presence on the Super Bowl stage. “Puerto Rico shines worldwide in the Super Bowl, sports and music will make the world vibrate high, as it should be, @sanbenito, I know we will vibrate high,” she wrote.
With this message, Trevi joined other show business figures, such as Katy Perry, who have also publicly shown their support for the urban artist.
The use of the appellative “Saint Benedict” was what most bothered Verástegui, who has expressed on multiple occasions his deep religious conviction and his critical stance towards certain exponents of urban music.
For him, the expression was exaggerated and even offensive from his faith perspective.
Eduardo Verástegui’s response

The actor’s reaction was not long in coming. In his response, he questioned both the nickname and the recognition of Bad Bunny, whom he had previously criticized. In fact, some time ago he expressed his disagreement with the NFL’s decision to choose the singer as the central figure of the show, referring to his music in highly derogatory terms.
In his message to Trevi, Verástegui wrote: “No, Gloria. Puerto Rico shines worldwide despite the ‘bad bunny’. What your idol does is very toxic garbage and is not worth even throwing it around. sanbenito? Please, Gloria, with all due respect, stop trying-r… to get attention.” The comment included a play on words that many interpreted as an allusion to the legal process the singer faced in the past for accusations of kidnapping and corruption of minors, charges of which she was exonerated in September 2024.
It should be recalled that Verástegui has openly shown his sympathy for the Republican Party in the United States and his support for Donald Trump’s policies, a stance that has also influenced the public perception of his statements. His criticism of Bad Bunny is not new, but this time it acquired greater notoriety by directly involving another show business figure.
So far, Gloria Trevi has not responded to the actor’s words. The exchange, however, has generated an intense debate on social networks about freedom of expression, ideological differences and the role of public figures in cultural and political conversations.
