Ten years have passed since one of the most painful tragedies in the history of Mexican wrestling: the death of Pedro Aguayo Ramírez, known as El Hijo del Perro Aguayo. On March 21, 2015, during a function in Tijuana, Baja California, the charismatic wrestler collapsed in mid-match against Rey Mysterio Jr. marking forever the fans of pancracio.

Now, a decade later, his friend and colleague Alberto del Río “El Patrón” broke his silence on the Mexican reality show La Granja VIP, where he shared details about what really happened that night that moved Mexican sports.

“The Dog was already badly hurt.”

During a chat with other participants of the reality show, “El Patrón” assured that El Hijo del Perro Aguayo was already physically deteriorated before entering the ring.

According to the former wrestler, the member of Los Perros del Mal suffered serious cervical and lumbar injuries that, over time, had worsened.

“He was already very injured in his cervical and lumbar region. What happened was that he took a whip, hit the back of his neck and his cervical spine came off,” said Alberto del Río, making it clear that Rey Mysterio was not responsible for the tragedy.

“El Patron” recalled that the initial version circulating in media and social networks blamed Rey Mysterio due to the fact that the collapse occurred right after his iconic maneuver, the 619.

However, he clarified that the fatal blow happened before that move, and that Mysterio never directly impacted his opponent.

“Rey doesn’t even touch him. When he approaches for 619, the Dog doesn’t move anymore,” he explained.

The two versions of his death

Alberto del Río also shared that he knows of two versions of the wrestler’s death.

The first suggests that Aguayo Jr. suffocated while hanging on the ropes after losing strength in his neck.

The second indicates that he died on the way to the hospital, victim of cervical trauma.

“One version says that he suffocated with the rope because he no longer had the strength to get up, and another that he died in the ambulance because of the damage to his cervicals,” he detailed.

The official report from the Mexican authorities confirmed that the cause of death was severe cervical trauma, the result of a bad fall inside the ring during the show in which Manik, Extreme Tiger and Rey Mysterio Jr. also participated.

A legacy that lives on

Pedro Aguayo Ramirez was 35 years old and one of Mexico’s most beloved wrestlers.

Son of the legendary Perro Aguayo, he founded the group Los Perros del Mal, which marked a whole generation of fans and stars of the ring.

His aggressive style, charisma and commitment made him an unrepeatable figure within the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and AAA.

Ten years after his death, the wrestling community continues to remember his legacy and the lesson of his departure: the importance of medical care and the prevention of serious injuries in the ring.

For Alberto del Río, the memory of his friend is still as vivid as it was on that March 21, 2015.

“He was a warrior. El Perro gave everything for this sport and deserves to be remembered with respect and truth,” concluded El Patrón.
