The production company Amaya Productions is developing, in alliance with Zero Gravity Managementa fictional series inspired by the life of Emma Coronel.
The project will approach his story from his own perspective and will focus on his relationship with Joaquín Guzmán Loeraknown as “El Chapo”. In addition, it was confirmed that Rafael Amaya will head the cast.
Emma Coronel and the ‘El Chapo’ series: A crime drama
The proposal is shaping up to be a high-level crime drama that, while based on known facts, will be developed from a fictionalized perspective. The narrative will explore themes of power, loyalty and survival, focusing on the impact that the relationship with Guzmán had on Coronel’s life.
According to initial details, the series will seek to offer an intimate and emotional look at its story, moving away from the purely police or judicial approach that has predominated in other stories about drug trafficking.
Rafael Amaya will play the male character inspired by Guzmán, representing his return to the genre that consolidated his international career. The actor is widely recognized for his starring role in El Señor de los Cieloswhich he starred in for ten seasons.
Emma Coronel herself is participating as executive producer of the project, along with Maritza Ramos and Amaya himself. Coronel publicly expressed her support for the choice of the actor and shared a personal comment on the matter: she noted that her husband liked Amaya’s work in television and considered it appropriate for him to take on this role in the series.
An alliance with international experience
Los Angeles-based Zero Gravity Management is in the early stages of developing the project. The company has been involved with such well-known productions as Ozark y The Accountantwhich reinforces the international ambition of the proposal.
The team is currently in talks with studios and platforms to finalize the production and distribution of the series.
At the same time, Coronel is working on writing a memoir focused on his prison experience. In that text he will address his incarceration in first person, as well as reflections on resilience and personal transformation. The publishing project could complement the narrative focus of the series.
The alliance between Coronel and Maritza Ramos arose from a personal and professional relationship based on trust and the shared goal of telling this story with care and creative control. For now, the series continues in development, shaping up to be one of the most talked-about bets in the contemporary crime genre.
