The script could not have been more epic. In what is rumored to be his last derby regio, André-Pierre Gignac showed why he is the greatest idol in the history of Tigres UANL.

With an agonizing goal in the 90+2nd minute, the 40-year-old Frenchman snatched a draw from Monterrey and unleashed madness in the tenth round of the Liga MX.

Clasico Regio: Tigres wins over Monterrey

The 40-year-old Frenchman André Pierre Gignac confirmed his status as a Mexican Tigres UANL legend on Saturday by giving the team a 1-0 win over Monterrey in the derby regio of Mexican soccer.

In what could have been his last match against Rayados, Tigres’ fiercest rival, Gignac entered the field in the 80th minute and in the 90+2 minute decided the match on the tenth matchday of the championship.

In the first half, Tigres, who had possession of the ball 56-44 in their favor, were a little better, but neither team scored in a game with moments of heavy traffic in the middle of the court and numerous fouls.

Both teams came out looking for goals in the second half, in which, once again, they got tangled up in the middle of the field and had little contact with the opponent’s area.

In the 80th minute, the Argentine Guido Pizarro sent Gignac on the field in place of the Uruguayan Rodrigo Aguirre. Encouraged by the fans, the Frenchman looked for the opposing goal and, in stoppage time, became the hero of the felines, accepting a ball from the Brazilian Joaquím and scoring with a right-footed shot.

Tigres has five wins, one draw, four defeats and 16 points to move up to sixth place, nine points behind leaders Cruz Azul and three ahead of Monterrey, the team of Spaniard Sergio Canales, in ninth place in the standings.

This Saturday, Cruz Azul confirmed its leadership by beating San Luis 3-0 with goals from Argentine Agustín Palavecino, Uruguayan Gabriel Fernández and Andrés Montaño, who reflected the superiority of Argentine coach Nicolás Larcamón’s Azules on the scoreboard.

Cruz Azul confirmed its leadership with eight wins, one draw, one loss and 25 points, four points ahead of champions Toluca, who will host Juárez FC tomorrow, and Chivas Guadalajara, who beat Atlas 1-2 on Saturday.

Argentine coach Gabriel Milito ‘s Chivas went from strength to strength and won with goals from Armando González and Ángel Sepúlveda, after Paulo Ramírez had opened the scoring for Atlas.

In other matches today, Ecuador’s Enner Valencia gave Pachuca a 2-1 win over Puebla and América defeated Querétaro 1-2 with goals from Uruguay’s Brian Rodríguez and Patricio Salas, while Alí Ávila scored for Querétaro.

The tenth round, which began on Friday with Mazatlán’s 4-2 win over León and Pumas UNAM’s 0-1 win over Necaxa, will conclude on Sunday when champions Toluca will host Juárez FC and Tijuana will host Santos Laguna.
