Puerto Rican urban artist Farruko is trying to “break stigmas” by presenting his first line of medical cannabis, Carbonabis, which seeks to offer a “better lifestyle” to patients with chronic conditions such as his.

“I was given the opportunity for this dream. It was something I had been flirting with for a while with the idea of being able to do things with purpose, like music, the workshop, the motorcycle and now cannabis,” Farruko said in an interview with EFE at 167motorsports, his vehicle and motor mechanics company in Bayamón, a municipality neighboring San Juan.

According to Carlos Efrén Reyes Rosado, Farruko’s given name, throughout his 15-year musical career he has continually tried to “break parameters and stigmas”, both personally and musically, expanding his name and brand on a commercial level, such as his record label Carbon Fiber Music.

For Farruko, the purpose of cannabis is to “seek a better lifestyle” for patients suffering from a chronic disease and “give them an alternative to use a more natural product”, discarding medicines.

“Natural will always work better than chemical. There is a stigma, a lack of education” about the use of cannabis, the singer said.

The interpreter of hits such as ‘Pepas’, ‘Calma Remix’ with Pedro Capó, ‘Krippy Kush’ with Bad Bunny or ‘Delincuente’ with Anuel AA, highlighted that Carbonabis is developed to support patients facing conditions such as cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic pain, just like himself.

Farruko, he said, has suffered from gout, rematoid arthritis, flat feet, plantar fasciitis, among other conditions, in his right leg since he was 25 years old -now 34-, which at times has limited his ability to walk or move around on stage to the point of having to use a cane.

To counteract muscle aches and pains, his doctor prescribed muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs that gave him relief, but caused him stomach discomfort.

In response, she began to question the doctor about the reasons for her poor recovery and consulted him about the use of medical cannabis, while also improving her diet.

“My conditions are degenerative. It doesn’t heal, but it can be treated,” said the artist, whose grandfather also suffered from some of the same conditions.

As a way to help others with similar ailments, Farruko took on the task of studying the positive and medical benefits of cannabis.

At the moment, some of the products sold by Carbonabis, produced in a factory in Mayagüez (west), are cannabis flower, gummies, vape, ointment and chocolates.

Farruko’s announcement of his medical cannabis line comes almost four years after he announced that he had converted to Christianity, which has provoked criticism from believers who condemn the use of the herb.

“A lot of people condemned me by telling me that I am a Christian, why am I smoking marijuana, among other things. But, people don’t know that I am prescribed. This was not something that I chose just because,” he defended himself.

The singer said that “the use of marijuana has been demonized for being used in an incorrect way, for rumba, to stay in a state of rapture”.

However, Farruko added that “recently the benefits have been discovered and it has been given a formality and structure and education on the benefits and how it should be used,” reported Agencia EFE.
