What began as a school tradition ended in a tragedy that has shocked Georgia. Jason Hughes, a beloved 40-year-old high school teacher, lost his life after being accidentally run over by one of his students during a backyard prank.

In an unexpected twist, while the justice system charges murder, the teacher’s widow has launched a desperate plea: that the lives of the young people involved not be ruined.

Gainesville Tragedy: A prank that ended in fatality

What was supposed to be a night of laughter and school pranks turned into the worst nightmare for the Gainesville community.

Jason Hughes, a beloved 40-year-old high school teacher, tragically lost his life last weekend after being accidentally run over by one of his students during a prank gone horribly wrong.

The plan was to “scare” them

It all started when five of Jason Hughes ‘ students came to his house with the intention of filling his trees with toilet paper, a common student tradition in the US.

What the young people did not know was that the professor was already waiting for them.

As his wife told The New York Times, Jason was excited about the visit and planned to come out as a surprise to give them a good scare and laugh with them.

However, fate had other plans.

When the students heard someone coming out of the house, panic set in and they ran to their cars to escape.

In the midst of the chaos and darkness, Jason Hughes slipped and fell to the pavement just as one of the vehicles started up, being run over by the 18-year-old driver.

Criminal charges and the widow’s position

Although the students immediately got down to help their teacher, the injuries were fatal and Jason was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

The driver is currently facing vehicular homicide charges, while the other four youths were charged with trespassing and littering on private property.

Hughes’ widow, who is also a teacher at the same school, has publicly called for the charges against the student to be dropped.

This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent another tragedy from occurring that will ruin the lives of these students,

Today, the Gainesville school is filled with flowers and messages for “Profe Hughes,” a man who loved his students so much that even in his last minutes he wanted to share a joke with them.
