The films ‘Sinners’ and ‘One Battle After Another’ triumphed Sunday at the 78th annual Screenwriters Guild of America (WGA) Awards, making them a shoo-in for next week’s Oscars.

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler took top honors at the ceremony in New York for writing the best original screenplay, for ‘Sinners’, while director Paul Thomas Anderson, of ‘One Battle After Another’, beat out Mexico’s Guillermo del Toro, who was competing with ‘Frankenstein’, for best adapted screenplay.

These triumphs reaffirm that both winning films are the favorites for the 98th Oscars next Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, where ‘Sinners’ will compete for a record 16 nominations, while ‘One Battle After Another’ is up for 13.

Sinners or One Battle After Another? The Oscar favorite

Both films have caused debate because of the juncture in the United States, as ‘Sinners’ addresses racism with a metaphor of vampires in the American South in the Jim Crow era, while ‘One Battle After Another’ shows rebel groups fighting a fictitious fascist government that deports migrants.

Meanwhile, at the gala in New York, the writers presented the Walter Berstein Award to comedian Stephen Colbert for “demonstrating with creativity, grace and courage the willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity.”

Colbert told jokes about U.S. President Donald Trump, who has celebrated CBS’s cancellation of the comedian’s late-night program, ‘The Late Show,’ which artists in Hollywood have interpreted as an attempt at censorship, although the company insists it is for financial reasons.

The awards also highlighted the television drama ‘The Pitt’, an HBO medical show about an emergency room in Pittsburgh, which took the awards for best drama series script, new series and drama episode.

While Apple TV’s ‘The Studio’ won for best comedy series script, which includes its star and writer Seth Rogen, reported Agencia EFE.
