Gold Cup 2025: Mexico, U.S., Honduras and Guatemala Clash for the Crown

The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2025, being played this summer in the United States, has entered its decisive phase, and with the quarterfinals already completed, four teams have advanced to the semifinals, which will be played this coming Wednesday, July 2, and the final pairings are already known.

In this edition, the tournament has had surprises and emotions from the group stage to the direct elimination round. Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and the United States are still alive and will be looking for a place in the final on Sunday, July 6.

The first Gold Cup semifinal match will be between the Mexican National Team and Honduras, one of its traditional rivals in Central America.

The match will be played on Wednesday, July 2 at 20:00 (Eastern Time).

Mexico arrives as favorites after qualifying as group leader and defeating Saudi Arabia 2-0 in the quarterfinals, a team that was invited to the tournament by Concacaf.

With a solid foundation led by Santiago Giménez and Raúl Jiménez, “El Tri” is seeking its second consecutive title after winning the 2023 crown.

Meanwhile, Honduras pulled off the big surprise by eliminating favorites Panama on penalties.

The match ended 1-1 and was defined with a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout, where goalkeeper Luis López was the star player.

Guatemala vs. the U.S.: duel of contrasts

In the other Gold Cup semifinal match, Guatemala, coached by Luis Fernando Tena, will face the host team, the United States.

The match will take place on Wednesday, July 2 at 17:00 (Eastern Time) at CityPark in St. Louis, Missouri.

Guatemala eliminated the mighty Canada in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

It is the first time in its history that it has reached a semifinal with such a leading role.

The United States, on the other hand, suffered more than expected to overcome Costa Rica, also on penalties (4-2) after a goalless draw.

The North American team, although with important absentees, relies on its young squad led by Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman.

The grand final will be played on Sunday, July 6 at 17:00 (Eastern Time) at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, with capacity for more than 70,000 fans.

Mexico is the favorite to lift the trophy, although the performances of Guatemala and Honduras have shown that anything can happen in the Gold Cup.
