Renowned theater actor Lucas García, 62, died suddenly on Friday night, April 18, while participating in a performance of the play “1580 – Rebelión de los 7 Jefes”, presented at the Sala Cervantes of the Centro Cultural ATE Casa España, in the city of Santa Fe.
The tragedy occurred after the closing of one of the acts. According to witnesses and fellow cast members, García collapsed backstage shortly after leaving the stage, which generated a moment of deep commotion among the cast and audience. Despite immediate efforts to revive him, the actor died on the spot, forcing the immediate cancellation of the performance.
A career dedicated to independent theater

Lucas García was a respected figure in the Argentine independent theater circuit, with a career spanning more than four decades.
His work not only stood out for the intensity of his interpretations, but also for his commitment to community-based cultural projects, especially in the provinces of the interior of the country.
Among his most recent collaborations was precisely the play “1580 – Rebelión de los 7 Jefes”, a historical production based on real episodes of the 16th century, which explores the conflict between colonial authorities and Creole leaders.
In it, García played one of the insurgent commanders, a role that required physical and expressive strength.
Reactions from the artistic community
The news of his death generated an immediate wave of messages of affection and tribute from colleagues, relatives and spectators.
The team of the play published an emotional statement on social networks in which they defined García as an artist of firm convictions, a constant fighter and passionate about his vocation.
Lucas was always fighting: for art, for memory, for social justice. His voice and his dedication will remain forever on the stages he loved so much

Several cultural institutions, such as the Argentine Actors Association and the National Theater Institute, expressed their condolences and highlighted García’s artistic and human legacy.
He was also remembered for his work as a teacher and trainer of new generations of actors.
A memory that resonates beyond the stage
This tragic event is reminiscent of the death of Canadian actor Julien Arnold, who in December 2024 also lost his life in the middle of a performance of “A Christmas Carol” in Montreal.
Both cases underline the level of emotional and physical commitment that live theater can demand from those who practice it with total vocation.
Lucas Garcia’s family has asked for respect and privacy, and has not yet announced details about tributes or funeral services.
It is expected that in the coming days a public ceremony will be held in his honor at the same Cultural Center where he gave his last performance.
