A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a Chicago-area man who resisted arrest and attempted to run over agents, authorities said Friday.

“He attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and dragging him as he fled the scene. Fearing for his life, the officer fired his firearm and struck the subject. Both the agent and the subject received immediate medical attention and were transported to a local hospital,” ICE explained in a statement.

The death of the man, who authorities say was in the U.S. illegally, was certified at the hospital, while the agent suffered “serious injuries and is in stable condition,” according to ICE.

The incident occurred in Franklin Park, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago near O’Hare International Airport.

“Viral social media videos and activists inciting undocumented immigrants to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as the safety of our officers and those detained,” DHS Under Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said of the issue.

According to local sources and social groups in Chicago told EFE, ICE has made an increased number of immigration arrests and raids in the city – as well as in the rest of the state of Illinois – as part of its Operation Midway Blitz.

However, the scale of the deployment has, for the moment, been much more limited than what U.S. President Donald Trump promised with his threats last weekend, and which presaged even the dispatch of the U.S. National Guard, as previously occurred in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

“I love the smell of deportations in the morning… Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” Trump posted on Truth Social last Saturday with an image of himself created by artificial intelligence simulating the movie ‘Apocalypse Now’.

Nonetheless, residents in and around Chicago remain vigilant to the presence of ICE agents and vehicles throughout the area, reporting activity to hotlines and networking profiles that monitor the raids.

This Friday, September 12, Trump announced that Memphis, in the state of Tennessee, will be the next city to which he will send National Guard troops.

This as part of his campaign against “growing crime” on the streets, although he warned that he “would have preferred to go to Chicago.”
