President Donald Trump’s administration has accelerated its immigration enforcement strategy with the creation of ImmigrationOS, a new mass surveillance platform developed by Palantir Technologies for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This system, which has received an initial investment of US$29.9 million, aims to integrate in real time data from multiple federal agencies to track, classify and facilitate the deportation of immigrants, especially those with criminal records or irregular immigration status. ICE justifies the direct contracting of Palantir by assuring that it is “the only company capable of delivering a functional system on time and with full integration capabilities with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)”.

How does it work?

ImmigrationOS is not a simple database.

It is a predictive analytics system that crosses information from multiple sources – including visa records, criminal records, entries and exits, biometric and geolocation data.

This is to generate alerts on persons classified as “priority for deportation”.

ImmigrationOS will also monitor “self-deportation” processes, i.e., those cases in which immigrants voluntarily leave the country.

In addition to tracing the complete cycle of each case: from its input to the final output order.

Concern

The implementation of ImmigrationOS has generated strong criticism from human rights advocates and privacy experts.

Organizations such as Human Rights Watch warn that the system could lead to massive and erroneous detentions.

Especially if the algorithms classify as suspicious people with legal immigration status but with errors in their records.

In addition, by incorporating data such as IP addresses, fingerprints and GPS tracking, the system could have constant surveillance capabilities.

Even on citizens or legal residents.

The lack of transparency in how this data is collected, used and protected fuels fears of institutional abuse.

High impact

For the U.S. Hispanic community, ImmigrationOS represents a warning.

Many immigrants, including those in regular processes or with TPS (Temporary Protected Status), could be affected by automated profiling and detention decisions without proper verification.

All residents are encouraged to stay informed.

In addition to updating their immigration documents and, if possible, having legal advice to act quickly in case of possible administrative errors or identity confusion.
