Javier Aguirre ignited the debate towards the 2026 World Cup after publicly assuring that he has practically defined the final list of 26 players who will represent Mexico in the World Cup. The coach of the Mexican National Team acknowledged that his call-up will provoke controversy among fans, analysts and former players, something he considers inevitable in every World Cup process.
During his participation in the podcast “El Posscass de Compass”, hosted by Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Germán Villa and Isaac Terrazas, the Mexican tactician spoke openly about the work done during the last few months and made it clear that the most important decisions have already been made. “Yes, I have them. I have them. They have passed filters,” said Aguirre when referring to the group of players who will be defending El Tri in the 2026 World Cup.
Aguirre explains how he selected his players

The national coach explained that the evaluation process was not limited only to performance in Liga MX or in friendly matches.
According to him, the coaching staff carefully observed the players’ behavior in complicated scenarios and far from the favorable environment that Mexico normally has when playing at home.
Aguirre revealed that he took players to matches and training camps in countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Panama to analyze how they reacted under pressure.
“I took them to Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, places where we are not local… and they have shown personality,” the coach commented.
The “Vasco” explained that the initial group exceeded 50 players.
But as the physical, tactical and mental tests progressed, the number began to dwindle.
This will lead to the current base that will make up the definitive call-up list (Filed under: Javier Aguirre defines World Cup list).
Tri’s call-up is already generating debate

The coach’s words quickly provoked reactions from Mexican fans.
Javier Aguirre acknowledged that he is well aware that no World Cup roster will satisfy everyone.
“Ever since I was a kid, in the lists there’s always Juan missing and Pedro left over, and you’re never going to please everyone,” Aguirre said during the podcast.
In social networks, discussions have already begun around soccer players such as Alexis Vega, César Huerta, Santiago Gimenez, Guillermo Ochoa and Gilberto Mora.

Although the Mexican Soccer Federation has not yet made the final call-up list official, a possible list of players that could be part of the team is already circulating.
Goalkeepers include Guillermo Ochoa, Raúl Rangel and Carlos Acevedo.
In defense are names such as César Montes, Johan Vásquez, Israel Reyes and Jesús Gallardo.
Edson Álvarez, Luis Chávez, Orbelín Pineda, Álvaro Fidalgo and the promising young Gilberto Mora stand out in the midfield.
Meanwhile, the forward line includes Santiago Gimenez, Raúl Jiménez, Julián Quiñones, Roberto Alvarado and César “Chino” Huerta, who could take one of the last available spots.
The great unknown is still who will be sacrificed in the last cut before the start of the World Cup (Filed as: Javier Aguirre defines World Cup roster).
