Javier Aguirre, Mexico’s coach, announced on Tuesday that the friendly match against Portugal scheduled for March 28 at the Azteca Stadium is not in doubt despite the perception of insecurity in the country.
“It does not generate uncertainty for me. It’s normal that they have the right to evaluate the circumstances, but I’m considering that game for next month on FIFA dates with my players who are playing away. I think the match against Portugal will go off without a hitch,” said the coach.
Portuguese Federation closely follows the situation in Mexico

Aguirre referred to the statement issued earlier in the day by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Hours later, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) clarified on its social networks that there are no modifications planned for this commitment.
“The Mexican Football Federation and the Portuguese Football Federation clarify that it is their mutual desire that the preparation match for the 2026 World Cup be held in Mexico on March 28.”
“So far, the date and place of the match remain unchanged,” was the FMF’s message.
At the press conference prior to Mexico’s friendly match against Iceland this Wednesday at La Corregidora stadium in Querétaro, Aguirre spoke about his team’s feelings regarding the situation in the country.
“I don’t know what the image outside the country is. We as Mexicans are sensitive to the moment we are living”:
“But it’s up to us to play this game and continue preparing for the FIFA match in March (Mexico vs. Portugal), and that’s my job.
“I am assured by the people at the Federation that there is security for all of us,” concluded ‘el Vasco’.
