President Donald Trump delivered a 107-minute State of the Union address Tuesday, the longest before a joint session of Congress in the nation’s history.

In doing so, Trump beat the record he himself had set last year, when, in the inaugural congressional address of his second term, he spoke before senators and members of the House of Representatives for 99 minutes, eight minutes less than today.

The president himself had already warned the day before that he would give a very long speech before Congress.

During his speech, the Republican highlighted what he considered to be the great achievements of his administration, such as the fight against drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

He also affirmed that his administration has achieved successes in economic matters, controlling inflation and bringing the price of a gallon of gasoline below 2 dollars, in addition to imposing tariffs on imports from other countries, which he assured will eventually replace the “income tax” in the future.

The president also took the opportunity to attack the Democrats, denouncing, for example, their rejection of the bill to require all U.S. voters to certify their nationality when casting their ballots in order to combat the irregularities that, according to him, are widespread and cost him the 2020 presidential election.

Trump also denounced that the Democrats “have cut all funds for the Department of Homeland Security“, the portfolio in charge of immigration, which has been in partial shutdown for 11 days due to the opposition’s refusal to approve budget items.

Their refusal comes as they demand changes to immigration agents’ protocols – from banning them from wearing masks to requiring them to have warrants to conduct raids – after two U.S. citizens from Minnesota were killed in immigration detention raids in January.

The President’s speech, whose popularity ratings are around 40 %, is being followed with special interest this year due to the fact that in November the country holds mid-term legislative elections in which the Republicans are playing to maintain their slim minorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
