The historic Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas, 38, is close to becoming a new player for Pumas UNAM. According to media reports from AS México, La Nación and El Informador, there is already a verbal agreement between the goalkeeper and the university board, and he is expected to arrive in Mexico City in the next few days. His arrival will depend on passing the medical exams and completing the necessary immigration documentation. Pumas, in need of results after a poor start to the Apertura 2025 (last place and six goals conceded in two games), is looking to Navas as an immediate goalkeeping solution. The club has suffered major mistakes in goalkeeper Rodrigo Parra, who has not been able to establish himself as a starter.
Keylor Navas, on the other hand, is currently playing for Newell’s Old Boys of Argentina, a team he joined at the beginning of 2025. Although he has a contract until 2026, the Rosario club is willing to negotiate his departure due to the player’s age and high salary. They have even started to look for a replacement: Sergio “Chiquito” Romero, former Manchester United and Argentina national team player, is one of the names that are being mentioned to take his place.
Why is his signing important?

Keylor Navas is not just any player.
He is the most decorated goalkeeper in the history of CONCACAF:
He won three Champions League titles with Real Madrid, starred for PSG, Levante, Nottingham Forest and led Costa Rica to the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Keylor Navas has more than 120 international caps for his national team and is considered a legend in Central America.
His experience, leadership and professionalism would be vital for a team like Pumas, which is looking to return to the top levels of Mexican soccer.
As well as reinforcing its sporting project after adding figures such as the Welshman Aaron Ramsey, who also arrived in this market.
When could he make his debut?

His presentation will depend on passing the medical exams

If all goes as expected, Keylor Navas could make his debut on July 25, when Pumas faces Querétaro on Day 3 of the Apertura.
His presence could mark a turning point in the team’s defensive performance, which has suffered from a lack of leadership at the back.
