The South Korean national team got off to a strong start in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, defeating the Czech Republic 11-4 in its first Group C game at the Tokyo Dome. The South Korean team showed an explosive offense from the first innings and hit four home runs, the most Korea has ever recorded in a single game in the history of the World Baseball Classic.
The victory is significant for Korea, which is looking to put disappointing results behind it in recent editions of the tournament, where it was eliminated in the first round in 2013, 2017 and 2023. For baseball fans in the United States, home to millions of Latino followers of the sport, the World Classic has become one of the most attractive events outside of Major League Baseball’s(MLB) regular season.
Bo Gyeong Moon leads the Korean offensive

The most outstanding player of the game was first baseman Bo Gyeong Moon.
He drove in five runs and set the offensive pace from the start of the game.
Moon opened the scoring in the first inning with a powerful grand slam to center field, an approximately 428-foot hit that gave Korea an early lead.
Later, infielder Shay Whitcomb, a player who has recently played in the Major Leagues with the Houston Astros, hit two home runs to extend the Asian team’s lead.
Whitcomb hit his first home run in the third inning and punished the opposing pitching again in the fifth inning, consolidating a lead that the Czech Republic was unable to reverse.
The team’s fourth home run came from Detroit Tigers outfielder Jahmai Jones, who hit a round-tripper in the eighth inning.
Czech Republic tried to react but it was not enough

Despite Korea’s dominance, the Czech national team had a few opportunities to get closer on the scoreboard during the first few innings.
The European team left the bases loaded in the second inning and also left runners on in the fourth inning, which limited their ability to close the gap.
They finally scored in the fifth inning when former Baltimore Orioles infielder Terrin Vavra hit a three-run home run to right field.
However, the Korean offense quickly responded with another home run by Whitcomb in the same episode, maintaining a comfortable lead for the Asians (Filed as: Korea kicks off the 2026 World Baseball Classic with offensive exhibition).

What’s next in World Classic Group C

After the loss, the Czech Republic will be looking for their first win of the tournament against Australia in their next Group C match.
Korea, meanwhile, will have a much bigger challenge in its next game when it faces Japan, a team that features MLB star Shohei Ohtani.
This match will be one of the most eagerly awaited in the group and could be key to defining the positions for the next round of the tournament.
For baseball fans in the United States – including a large Latino community – the World Classic represents a unique opportunity to see MLB stars compete on behalf of their countries.
