The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasized this Thursday, March 5, that her government presented a diplomatic note to the United States after the death of a Mexican migrant while in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while assuring that legal support is being provided to the family to clarify the facts.

“A diplomatic note was immediately presented and the family is being supported and the way in which we make the complaint is already through the families,” said the president during her morning press conference.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) informed that it asked the U.S. authorities for an “immediate and exhaustive” investigation to clarify the death of the Mexican national, which occurred at the Adelanto Processing Center in California, while he was in ICE custody.

So far, neither the identity of the Mexican national nor the causes of death have been made public, so the Mexican Foreign Ministry requested detailed information on the case from the United States, including the medical file and custody reports.

In this regard, Sheinbaum stressed that her government has acted similarly in previous cases and that the objective is to accompany the families to file complaints in U.S. courts.

“So, we are working on it and it always depends on the victim. Now, it is not the first case and this diplomatic note was stronger, because we must always protect the lives of our compatriots,” he said.

The president added that Mexico urges Washington to clarify the circumstances of the death and to determine if there were responsibilities.

“In all cases a diplomatic note has been sent and in all cases the families are being supported to file a complaint in the United States, in the corresponding courts and obviously in this case we are also demanding all the information, how it happened, why it happened and everything that has to do with it,” he said.

The Mexican Consulate in San Bernardino, California, activated consular assistance protocols to accompany the family of the deceased, offer legal support and facilitate the necessary steps for the eventual repatriation of the remains.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry also warned that it will seek to investigate the systemic conditions that have led to these types of cases.

According to local media, seven Mexicans died last year while in ICE detention, the highest number since the creation of the immigration agency.
