In an operation that highlights the extreme risks faced by those attempting to cross the southern border, Border Patrol(CBP) agents located 19 Mexican migrants hidden in the darkness of a drainage system between California and Mexico.

The discovery, made thanks to remote surveillance systems, not only revealed the plight of three unaccompanied minors, but also set off security alarms by identifying individuals with serious criminal records.

A deadly hiding place

The San Diego Sector Tunnel Team had to intervene to clear the ducts and rescue the group of 16 adults and 3 minors.

Authorities warned that these drainage systems are death traps that can flood in seconds or expose people to toxic gases.

What began as a rescue and immigration detention operation took on a darker hue when two of the detainees were identified: brothers Raudel and Ivan Carrillo Padilla.

Both had previously been deported after serving sentences in 2017.

His offenses included possession, transportation and intent to sell methamphetamines in California.

Now, they face federal prosecution for illegal re-entry into the country.

This incident occurs in a context of maximum tension.

While authorities celebrate the arrest of repeat offenders, human rights advocates point out that the Trump administration’s mass deportation policies are pushing families and minors to use increasingly inhumane routes.

Just days after this discovery, tragedy struck again with the death of six immigrants in a freight car in Laredo, Texas, confirming that the border has become a graveyard for those seeking the “American dream” by desperate means.
