The judicial siege closes in on Havana’s leadership. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has shaken the geopolitical chessboard by filing a formal criminal indictment against Raul Castro. The charges are not minor: murder, conspiracy to kill Americans and destruction of aircraft.

A few days shy of his 95th birthday, Fidel Castro’s brother is facing an arrest warrant that could result in life imprisonment or death penalty. Here are the key facts about Raúl Castro, who has been charged.

1. The 7 criminal charges

The U.S. justice system charges Castro for the death of the four Brothers to the Rescue airmen in 1996.

The indictment alleges that, as Minister of the Armed Forces, Raul gave the direct order to pulverize the two civilian planes carrying three U.S. citizens and one legal resident.

2. The “Queen’s Exhibit”: The audio confession

A crucial piece of evidence supporting the case is a recording from June 1996.

In the audio, Raul Castro is allegedly heard admitting the order: “Throw them into the sea when they appear”.

This confession, coupled with the ICAO report confirming that the attack occurred in international waters, disproves the regime’s official version of an alleged violation of its airspace.

3. The Domino Effect: From Maduro to Castro

Donald Trump’s administration has toughened its stance following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Caracas.

With Maduro already behind bars in New York, Washington is sending a clear message: no one is untouchable.

The recent May 1 executive order has extended sanctions to 11 top Cuban officials, financially suffocating the dictatorship.

4. Other military in the spotlight

Raúl Castro is not alone in the dossier.

The indictment includes key figures of the Cuban military apparatus such as Emilio José Palacio Blanco and Lorenzo Alberto Pérez-Pérez.

U.S. The U.S. seeks to dismantle the command structure that executed the attack against the exile organization that assisted the rafters.

5. Is there a capture operation coming in Cuba?

Although Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche did not confirm a military intervention similar to the one in Venezuela, he was blunt: “A warrant has been issued for his arrest”.

There are rumors of a negotiation involving Castro’s grandson, Raul Guillermo Rodriguez (“El Cangrejo”), but the official position is clear: Castro must appear before a court in Florida, of his own free will “or by any other means”.
