Lady Gaga goes ‘Latina’ at the Super Bowl

What does the singer's dress symbolize?

Wearing a custom-made dress by the Dominican firm Luar and with a copy of the Puerto Rican Flor de Maga on one of her straps. This is how Lady Gaga appeared and sang at the Super Bowl, a gesture of support for Latinos on Bad Bunny’s big night and for the defense of immigrants in the United States.

Designed by the Dominican Raul Lopez, the light blue draped dress was a nod to the first color of the triangle of the Puerto Rican flag, which was in force between 1895 and 19 52. Then the shade of blue on which the white star is drawn was darkened.

The Luar firm posted on Instagram a photo of Lady Gaga alongside Bad Bunny, accompanied by the caption “for culture and for all immigrants, this is how we unite.”

The dress combined structure and fluidity, with a fitted bodice and a wide skirt designed to accompany the scenic movement of the artist who performed alongside Bad Bunny, who wore a custom design by Zara and Adidas BADBO 1.0 sneakers, on sale today in the United States and Puerto Rico – at an original price of 160 dollars but already reaching 550 in resale.

Lady Gaga and her unexpected participation

One of the most talked about elements of the dress was the brooch that the singer wore on the dress: a red Flor de Maga, declared the national flower of Puerto Rico in 2019 and one of the most representative botanical symbols of the island, which the artist wore on the right shoulder strap of the dress, with a plunging V-neckline.

The styling, signed by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo -who also worked with Rosalía on the cover of her album ‘Lux’-, put the emphasis on accompanying the vindictive message of the performance.

This detail reinforces the cultural tribute nature of the performance, especially significant as it takes place alongside Bad Bunny, whose artistic proposal has always been linked to the vindication of the Puerto Rican and Latin identity in the international music industry.

The firm Luar, based in Brooklyn, was founded and is directed by Raul Lopez, a designer of Dominican origin who has built a career recognized for integrating Caribbean cultural references in a contemporary language, a proposal that has seduced the New York Fashion Week, where he will parade on the 15th.

Lady Gaga’s participation with a Luar design is part of an edition of the Super Bowl that several analysts have described as one of the most explicit in the celebration of Latino culture.

And its decision to collaborate with a Dominican designer in a context of maximum media exposure reinforces a growing trend in fashion: the incorporation of creators with diverse origins in global platforms, reported Agencia EFE.
