A man identified as Marcus Dotson, 33, was arrested in connection with the murder of a woman at a residence in the Cordova neighborhood east of the Memphis metropolitan area.

The crime, which authorities say is related to domestic violence, occurred over the weekend and has once again set off alarms about the increase in such cases in the state of Tennessee.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department (SCSO), Dotson was arrested by the MPD’s multi-agency gang unit in a joint operation on Monday morning, October 27.

The suspect faces charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and unlawful possession of a weapon as a convicted felon.

The victim was identified as Yesica Juarez, 32, who was found dead inside a home located on Manslick Road in the Cordova community.

Officers responding to the scene confirmed that the woman had been shot multiple times.

A domestic dispute ended in tragedy

SCSO spokesman Lt. David Ballard indicated that preliminary investigations point to the crime occurring following a domestic dispute between the victim and the suspect.

Although details about the exact relationship between the two have not been disclosed, authorities confirmed that there was a prior history of conflict.

Neighbors in the area told local media that they heard screams and then a series of detonations around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

“We thought it was fireworks until we saw the patrol cars arrive. It’s very sad, she was a quiet woman, she always waved when she passed,” recounted a Manslick Road resident who requested anonymity.

Suspect’s background

County court records show that Marcus Dotson has a criminal record for weapons possession, aggravated assault and probation violations.

Following his arrest, he was booked into the Shelby County Jail, where he remains in custody without bail while awaiting his first court hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, November 5.

Memphis police confirmed that no other suspects are involved and that the case remains under investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the homicide.

Domestic violence on the rise

The murder of Yesica Juarez comes against a troubling backdrop for Tennessee.

According to the state Department of Health and Family Services, incidents of domestic violence increased 14% in the last year, with Memphis recording the highest rate of homicides linked to intimate partner conflict in the entire state.

Local organizations such as CasaLuz Memphis, dedicated to supporting victims of domestic violence in the Latino community, reminded people of the importance of seeking help early.

CasaLuz and other entities in Memphis offer hotlines and shelters for affected women and families.

If support is needed, authorities recommend contacting the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (1-800-799-SAFE), available 24 hours a day and in Spanish.

Appeal for help on GoFundMe for Yesica Juárez

Yesica Juarez’s family opened a GoFundMe account to ask for help.

“Yesica was much more than a victim: she was a devoted mother, a loving sister, a beloved daughter, and a kind and beautiful soul who brought light to everyone around her,” the plea on GoFundMe begins.

“She leaves behind two children, a 14-year-old and a 1-year-old, who now face a future without their mother’s love and guidance. Our family is devastated and is doing everything possible to overcome this unimaginable loss,” the GoFundMe adds.

“Your donations will go to support Yesica’s children and cover expenses related to her passing.”
