Eight years after working together for the last time as the most emblematic Spanish-language newscasting duo in the United States, María Elena Salinas and Jorge Ramos share the headlines once again, this time to receive one of the most prestigious awards of their careers: the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism 2025, granted by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University (ASU).
Salinas, 71, and Ramos, 67, were for more than three decades the most credible news couple for the U.S. Hispanic audience through Noticiero Univision.
Together they covered historic events such as the U.S. presidential election, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the September 11, 2001 attack and multiple natural disasters and international conflicts.
Their professional chemistry and commitment to rigorous journalism made them a point of reference for millions of Latinos seeking information in their own language.
The announcement of the award comes shortly after the two journalists met again in August 2025 on María Elena Salinas’ podcast, where they talked about the current challenges of journalism and recalled decisive moments in their joint careers.
The reunion awakened nostalgia among fans who grew up watching them on the small screen and showed that, despite having taken different paths, both continue to set the tone in news coverage.
The social media announcement by María Elena Salinas and Jorge Ramos

Both Salinas and Ramos took to their social networks to share the news. “I am honored to receive the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism alongside my news partner for more than three decades, Jorge Ramos. Thanks to the Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University,” Salinas wrote on her X account (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
Ramos, for his part, posted a similar message on his Instagram stories, highlighting the pride of receiving a recognition that bears the name of one of the most respected journalists in the history of U.S. television.
The Walter Cronkite Award, now in its 42nd year, celebrates communicators who have demonstrated excellence, integrity and social impact in journalism. The award recognizes Salinas and Ramos not only for their individual achievements, but also for the pivotal role they played together in bringing visibility to the challenges and contributions of the Latino community in the United States.
The award coincides with a period of renewed professional activity for Jorge Ramos, who in June 2025 announced his return to television and political journalism after leaving Univision. He also launched the podcast The Moment with Paola Ramos and Jorge Ramos, a joint project with his daughter, journalist and author Paola Ramos, which explores the challenges of democracy and human rights in the Americas.
For many, this recognition is a celebration of the legacy that both journalists have built over the decades, setting the standard for rigorous reporting for Latino audiences. Their influence transcends the screen, inspiring new generations of reporters to uphold the pursuit of truth as a central tenet of journalism.
The Walter Cronkite Award reaffirms that both María Elena Salinas and Jorge Ramos remain indispensable figures in Hispanic journalism and in the U.S. democratic dialogue.
