Mariah Carey has done it again. In the 2025 holiday season, her iconic carol “All I Want for Christmas is You” returned to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, reaffirming its status as the most influential holiday anthem of the modern era. The song climbed four positions to reach the top spot, breaking a record with a cumulative 19 weeks at the top spot, an all-time high in the chart’s 67 years.

With this achievement, Carey’s classic matches the dominance of Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” (2024) and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus (2019), cementing it as one of the most successful songs in Hot 100 history.

Originally released in 1994 as part of the Merry Christmas album, the track did not reach the main charts on its release due to radio and sales rules at the time.

However, its resurgence began in 2017 thanks to the rise of streaming, which brought Christmas music closer to new generations.

Since then, the song has climbed consistently: top 10 in 2017, top 5 in 2018 and number one for the first time in 2019.

Since then, Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is you” has reached the top spot in the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and now 2025 seasons.

Becoming the only song to have dominated the Hot 100 in seven consecutive Christmas seasons.

This success also cemented another milestone for Mariah Carey:

Her 19th number one on the Hot 100, the most for a solo artist, is just one title shy of the all-time record of 20 held by the Beatles.

In addition, Carey is the first artist to achieve number ones in four different decades: 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2020.

In an archival interview, Mariah Carey expressed:

“I never imagined it would have this global impact. I’m grateful that so many people celebrate with this song every year.”

Its impact undoubtedly continues to grow.

It’s no surprise that Christmas music controls the charts in December.

In the same week that Mariah Carey reached number one, seven of the top ten spots on the Hot 100 were occupied by holiday songs.

“Last Christmas” by Wham! peaked at No. 2, achieving its highest position since its release in 1984.

The Hot 100 combines streaming plays, radio airplay, and physical and digital sales.

The popularity of streaming – from platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube – has been key to the resurgence of classic songs, making them an essential part of the musical tradition in the United States.
