An alleged leader of the MS-13 transnational gang who was wanted in Honduras for his alleged involvement in the murder of four people was arrested in the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska.

The arrest of Gerson Emir Cuadra Soto, a Honduran national, occurred on December 8 in Grand Island City as part of a joint operation between federal agencies.

According to Honduran authorities, Gerson Emir Cuadra Soto was under investigation for a quadruple homicide committed in 2022 and was facing charges for possession of firearms linked to the crime.

After his initial arrest in Honduras, he allegedly escaped from prison through bribes, which prompted an international alert.

MS-13, classified by the United States as a transnational criminal organization, has been the target of intensified operations in recent years due to its history of violence in Central America and in several US cities.

According to the complaint filed in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska, Gerson Emir Cuadra Soto illegally entered the United States from Mexico in 2022, shortly after his escape.

Once inside the country, he managed to obtain a driver’s license in California using his real identity, which caught the attention of the authorities when they crossed immigration and criminal databases.

The document became one of the key clues that allowed federal investigators to track his whereabouts.

FBI agents and Department of Homeland Security personnel followed the lead to Grand Island, an area in central Nebraska where the suspect led a discreet life, working and residing without arousing suspicion among neighbors.

Authorities reported that the arrest was carried out without incident, although they stressed that Gerson Emir Cuadra Soto is considered highly dangerous due to his previous record.

Special Agent Eugene Kowel, who heads the FBI’s Omaha office, noted that the capture “underscores the crucial work being done every day to address transnational gang threats.”

He also stressed that these types of operations require interagency cooperation and constant follow-up on individuals with violent histories who cross borders to evade justice.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a federal Department of Justice initiative that intensified in 2025.

It aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and strengthen public safety within the United States.

This operation has led to hundreds of arrests of individuals with links to gangs such as MS-13, Barrio 18 and other Central American criminal cells.

It is important to note that the federal complaint filed in Nebraska clarifies that Gerson Emir Cuadra Soto is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

His legal process in the United States could determine whether he faces immigration charges, additional federal crimes and even extradition to Honduras, where he still faces pending charges.
