The Frisco, Texas, Police Department reported Thursday that Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old Dallas Cowboys defensive wing, died apparently from a self-inflicted wound after fleeing a police chase.
“Officers received information that Kneeland had expressed suicidal ideation. Kneeland was found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police said via a statement.
They mourn his death

Earlier in the day, the Dallas Cowboys announced the death of their player who just the previous Monday participated with the team in the loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
“It is with deep sadness that the Dallas Cowboys report the tragic passing of Marshawn Kneeland this morning,” the Cowboys lamented.
In that game, the defensive back shined on special teams when he was part of a kick block.
A play in which he recovered the ball in the end zone to record the only touchdown of his career.
The statement from the Frisco Police Department explained that the player was involved in a traffic pursuit that ended in an accident from which he left the scene.
Frisco Police Detail Chase

“On Nov. 5 at about 10:39 p.m., the Frisco Police Department responded to assist the Texas Department of Safety in locating a vehicle that had evaded officers during a pursuit entering the City of Frisco,” the brief detailed.
The police operation lasted until the early hours of the morning.
“Initial reports indicated that a man, identified as Marshawn Kneeland, 24, a resident of Plano, Texas, fled the scene on foot,” the report added.
The statement said that the officers were alerted to the defensive wing’s unstable emotional state.
He was later found dead.
The NFL pays tribute to Marshawn

Marshawn Kneeland was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
He came to the Cowboys selected in the second round of the 2024 Draft, after shining with the Western Michigan Broncos of college soccer.
In two seasons in Dallas the defensive back had 26 tackles, one quarterback catch, one fumble recovered, one pass defensed and one defensive touchdown.
The NFL Players Association issued a message to all players.
He invited them to ask for help for any negative thoughts caused by depression.
“To our member players remember that facing the duel can be difficult.”
“Support each other and look out for each other’s well-being,” the league’s Players Association wrote.
