Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are getting closer to signing the renewal of the Argentine player, whose contract with the club ends at the end of this season, sources close to the negotiations told EFE.

The 38-year-old Argentine star and Inter Miami are putting the finishing touches on a contract extension that would allow Leo Messi to extend his career in MLS (Major League Soccer), where he joined from Paris Saint-Germain of France in the summer of 2023.

Could continue until the 2026 World Cup

The sources did not, however, specify the duration of the Argentine star’s new contract or a date for its announcement.

The renewal would mean that Messi would be active for the 2026 World Cup, which is being organized by the United States, along with Mexico and Canada, and in which Argentina will defend the title won in Qatar 2022.

Inter Miami has always expressed its desire to extend its relationship with the current team captain.

That opened the door to the most successful period of this newly founded club.

Driving the golden era of Inter Miami

Just weeks after Messi’s signing, ‘Las Garzas’ lifted their first official title, the Leagues Cup.

A year later they did the same with the MLS Supporter’s Shield.

In his first full season with Inter Miami last year, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner earned MLS MVP (Most Valuable Player) honors.

A recognition that he is close to repeating this year, according to information from EFE.

For many, Messi is the best footballer in history, even above his compatriot Diego Armando Maradona and Brazil’s Pelé.
