Inter Miami defeated Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1 on Saturday with goals from Jordi Alba, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the Argentine star’s return from injury, while LAFC, with Son Heung-min making his first start, defeated New England Revolution 2-0.
Messi, who had not played since he was injured on August 2 in the match against Mexican side Necaxa in the Leagues Cup, came on in the second half after starting the match as a substitute.
Messi makes triumphant return
Argentina’s Lionel Messi gave his team the lead with a goal from outside the box in the 84th minute, when the score was 1-1.
He then provided a magnificent back-heel assist for Uruguay’s Luis Suárez to seal the game.
Inter has 45 points in the East table, seven points behind leaders Cincinnati, but with three games in hand due to their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in June.
Messi makes a triumphant return to the top scorer in the league with 19 goals, one more than England’s Sam Surridge of Nashville.

Philadelphia lost the lead in the East after losing 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls with a goal by American Dylan Nealis.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati retook first place with a 1-3 win at Portland.
Evander scored Cincinnati’s third against his former team and now has 16 league goals.
LAFC’s newest signing, Korean Son Heung-min, made his debut in Boston as a starter and played all 90 minutes in a match that the Angelenos won 2-0 with goals from American Mark Delgado and Canadian Mathieu Choinière.
