Lionel Messi has revealed his favorite goal of his entire career: the header in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United. This choice was neither accidental nor nostalgic: it is part of the “A Goal in Life” charity campaign, recently launched by his foundation and supported by the Inter Miami CF club, where the Argentine star currently plays.

Speaking to the official media, Messi said that “I had many goals that are perhaps even more beautiful and of great value, because of their importance, but the header in the Champions League final against Manchester United was always my favorite”. This goal – scored on May 27, 2009 in Rome – was the second of the match, after Samuel Eto’o had opened the scoring, and sealed one of FC Barcelona’s most memorable nights under Pep Guardiola. What made this goal unique was not only the context, but the form: a technically perfect header despite Messi’s 5’7″ height, diving backwards and surprising Edwin van der Sar.

An unprecedented alliance

In an unparalleled collaboration, this goal has been transformed into a digital artwork by Turkish artist Refik Anadol.

It is one of the most outstanding exponents of art generated by data and algorithms.

The piece was made using biometric information, party movements and emotions captured in data.

Messi’s sporting legacy merged with the technological art of the 21st century.

The work, signed by Messi and Anadol, will be auctioned by Christie’s in 2025.

The funds raised will be used for educational and sports projects for youth in vulnerable situations, mainly in Latin America and Hispanic communities in the USA.

Since its launch just over a week ago, the campaign’s promotional video – narrated by actor Morgan Freeman and shared by the Inter Miami CF Foundation – has surpassed 50 million views on Instagram.

The global impact of the message demonstrates how soccer, art and solidarity can combine to generate a significant and positive impact.

For Hispanics living in the United States, this initiative represents not only a tribute to one of the most beloved idols in sports.

It is also an opportunity to see how influential Latino figures are using their legacy to create real change.
