In his letter, sent to authorities, Ramón Morales Reyes claimed that he planned to attend one of President Trump’s rallies and shoot him in the head.

He also promised to self-deport after committing the attack.

The threat was taken extremely seriously, especially in the current context, in which presidential security has been reinforced after previous incidents.

In an excerpt from the letter released by DHS, Morales Reyes wrote:

We are tired of this president messing with us Mexicans. We have done more for this country than you white people. You have been deporting my family and I think it is time Donald J. Trump get what he has coming to him

According to the Department of Homeland Security’s official statement, Ramón Morales Reyes has entered the United States irregularly at least nine times between 1998 and 2005.

His history in the country includes multiple incidents with the law.

According to DHS records, he has previously been arrested for:

Disorderly conduct aggravated by domestic violence.

He is currently in federal custody in a Dodge County, Wisconsin jail while his legal status and possible charges related to the threat to the president are being evaluated.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem weighed in on the incident and underscored the seriousness of the case, noting that it occurs “not even a year after” the attempted attack on Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, as part of his 2024 presidential campaign.

“All politicians and members of the press should take heed of these repeated attempts on President Trump’s life and moderate their rhetoric.

“I will continue to take all necessary steps to protect President Trump,” Noem stated.

Since Trump returned to the presidency in January 2025, his administration has stepped up immigration enforcement and deportation actions, including stricter border policies, labor raids, and reviving agreements with third countries to expedite removals.

What should migrants know?

This case has generated concern among sectors of the migrant community, as it could fuel discourse that generalizes or criminalizes immigrants.

It is important to clarify that the actions of a single individual do not represent the entire migrant community, most of whom work, contribute to the economy and comply with U.S. laws.

It is also essential that migrants, whether they are in legal proceedings or not, avoid any kind of statement or action that could be interpreted as a threat, as the legal consequences can be severe.

In cases of detention, it is always recommended to seek specialized legal advice and not to sign documents without understanding their contents.
