Mexico condemns immigration raids in Los Angeles and demands respect for human rights

In June 2025, U.S. immigration authorities conducted raids in Los Angeles, California, resulting in the detention of at least 35 Mexican nationals.

These actions have generated concern and condemnation by the Mexican government and human rights organizations.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her rejection of immigration raids in Los Angeles, calling them an ineffective and violent strategy to address the migration phenomenon.

At an event in Puebla, Sheinbaum affirmed: “It is not with raids or violence that the migratory phenomenon will be addressed”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs(SRE) activated consular assistance and protection mechanisms to ensure that detained nationals receive adequate legal advice and fair treatment.

Mexican consulates in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Santa Ana are conducting proactive visits to detention centers in the region.

The raids sparked protests in Los Angeles and other cities.

In response, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops without authorization from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Newsomn called the measure illegal and announced legal action against the federal administration.

During the demonstrations, there were clashes between protesters and law enforcement, including the use of tear gas and rubber bullets.

Civil rights organizations have denounced the excessive use of force and the criminalization of migrants.

President Sheinbaum reiterated the need for comprehensive immigration reform in the United States that considers the contributions of migrants and respects their human rights.

He stressed that Mexicans in the United States are honest workers seeking a better life for their families.

The Mexican government has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the United States in the search for humanitarian and legal solutions that address the causes of migration and protect migrant communities.
