Lionel Messi was named the 2026 MLS Player of the Day 2 on Monday for the comeback he led with a brace and an assist as Inter Miami defeated Orlando City 2-4.

The Argentine star scored the 2-2 equalizer with a great shot from outside the box, assisted Venezuelan Telasco Segovia in the 2-3 and capped his brilliant work with a free kick goal. Inter Miami was down 2-0 at the half.

This is the thirteenth time Lionel Messi has been named MLS (Major League Soccer) Player of the Day since he landed in Miami in 2023.

This is the first time so far this season.

Lionel Messi, the league’s MVP for the past two seasons, is second only to Landon Donovan (19 man of the match awards).

As well as Jeff Cunningham (14), both with more than a decade of MLS experience.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi scored a brace in Inter Miami’s 2-4 win over Orlando City on Sunday.

In what was the first win for the ‘Herons’ in the current MLS season.

A free kick by the former Barcelona star in the 90th minute, against which the opposing goalkeeper could have done much more, sealed the victory for the Miami team against its regional rival.

They had never lost at their home stadium against Inter Miami.

The Florida derby was, however, a further demonstration of the extreme defensive fragility suffered by the team led by Messi.

Inter Miami is the current defending champion and opens the season with five consecutive away games as they complete work on their new stadium, Miami Freedom Park.

On matchday three, they will visit DC United in the U.S. capital.
