Javier Aguirre, Mexico’s coach, stated that if his team wants to be among the best teams in the world, it must be more forceful against top-ranked opponents, such as Uruguay.
“In the recent matches we have not won, we have faced opponents at our level, so if we want to make that leap in quality we must improve our finishing. Today we were no better than Uruguay,” he acknowledged.

The Mexican National Team tied 0-0 against Uruguay in a friendly match played in Torreón, in the state of Coahuila, located in the north of the country.
Javier Aguirre’s men had the best chances to score in the first half, but the lack of goals from Raúl Jiménez, Hirving Lozano and Roberto Alvarado prevented the home team from taking the lead.
“I saw an intense match, very evenly matched. I think we were better in shots on goal, ball possession, passes, but we were not able to win, we were not convincing and that’s why we were not superior to Uruguay, but we didn’t deserve to lose either,” he explained.
According to the coach, despite the fact that Mexico has not won in its five recent preparation matches (draws with Japan, South Korea, Ecuador and now Uruguay, and a loss to Colombia), it has made progress in its performance.
“The ideal would be to win, but we have continued to grow, unfortunately we have five games without a win, anyway we are on our way to finding the best team that we will stop at next year’s World Cup,” he assured.
In its second friendly match of this FIFA day, Mexico will face Paraguay next Tuesday in San Antonio (Texas), a match it expects to play with the same intensity as Uruguay did on Saturday.
“I have a team with good age; I think we took a step forward today, now we are going to see if we are consistent against Paraguay, which is a physically powerful team, with a lot of individual quality, similar to Uruguay; they have good transitions and do not depend on one element. We will see what we will do to try to overcome them”, he concluded.
