Mexican boxer Saúl Canelo Álvarez, undisputed super middleweight champion, will face this Saturday against American Terence Crawford, who seeks to become the first absolute champion in three different divisions.

With a record of 63 wins, 39 by knockout, 2 losses and 2 draws, Alvarez will try to take away Crawford’s undefeated record, 41 wins, 31 of them by knockout, in addition to having a record that includes having won all four belts at super lightweight and welterweight.

Canelo faces Crawford

“We know Canelo is a tough opponent, we know him inside out. We know who he is and that’s the reason why we accepted this fight, because that’s how legends are formed, to take risks like we are doing now,” Crawford said at the press conference before the fight to be held at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It will be a tough test for Alvarez, who at 35 has not looked as dominant in his last few fights and has not won a fight by knockout since his November 2021 victory over Caleb Plant.

His last fight, last May against the Cuban William Scull, was of little spectacle and yet he came out with his hand up and snatched the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight title, to add them to those of the WBA, WBC, WBO and WBO and to re-establish himself as the undisputed champion of the division.

Previously, he defeated Puerto Rican Edgar Berlanga, his compatriot Jamie Munguía, American Jermell Charlo and British John Ryder, but without showing much superiority as in the past.

Also, the choice of those opponents has been criticized because they were not the strongest gladiators in the super middleweight division, before he missed opportunities to face David Benavidez, an offensive fighter who was the WBC’s mandatory challenger.

Crawford also raised doubts from his critics, as the 37-year-old American will move up two divisions, something that is usually difficult in boxing.

While the Omaha native has one of the best careers for a boxer in recent years, the challenge of facing a heavier opponent puts him at a disadvantage.

The fight at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will be at 8:00 p.m. local time, which is 10:00 p.m. EST.
