On May 19, 2025, Manuel Vega López, a Mixteco worker from San Juan Mixtepec, Oaxaca, was murdered in Gilbert, Arizona, while doing yard work at a private residence. He was 51 years old and was the main breadwinner of his family. His case has shocked the Latino community in the United States, where thousands are demanding justice and solidarity.
According to the Gilbert Police Department, the assailant, Wyatt Bruce Ford, 28, fired four shots at Manuel following an argument over an alleged misunderstanding related to a previous robbery. Manuel Vega Lopez was unarmed, only carrying his work tools.

Ford was arrested at the scene and faces second-degree murder charges.
The police ruled out any direct link between Manuel Vega López and criminal acts.
The next court hearing in the case is scheduled for May 27, when an update on the criminal proceedings against the defendant is expected.

Manuel Vega López was the pillar of his family.
His wife suffers from chronic kidney failure, relies on dialysis every other day and faces progressive vision loss due to diabetes.
In addition, her youngest son has been diagnosed with leukemia and suffers neurological sequelae from the treatment, including frequent seizures.

The family has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover legal expenses and repatriate the body to Oaxaca, where they wish to give him a dignified burial.

The Mixtec community in the U.S. has mobilized to demand justice and provide financial support. The family appeals to the public:
