MTV says goodbye… but only in these countries

La despedida tuvo un fuerte simbolismo: la última canción transmitida fue “Video Killed the Radio Star” de The Buggles

MTV, one of the most influential brands in the history of music and pop culture, began 2026 with a significant change in its international presence: the definitive closure of several of its television channels dedicated exclusively to the broadcast of video clips 24 hours a day.

The measure affected the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Ireland, Poland, Austria, Brazil and Australia, according to international media reports.

Which channels did MTV stop broadcasting?

The channels that ceased operations on December 31 were MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live, all focused on continuous music programming.

The farewell had a strong symbolism: the last song broadcasted was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles, the same video clip with which MTV started broadcasting 38 years ago, in 1981.

The closure generated confusion and nostalgia among the brand’s followers, especially on social networks, where many users mistakenly interpreted that MTV had stopped broadcasting worldwide. However, this did not happen.

What’s happening with MTV in the United States?

In the United States, MTV continues to operate without changes in its main signals.

However, several years ago the channel stopped focusing on music as the core of its programming.

Currently, a large part of its content is made up of reality shows and series, a strategy also adopted by other signals of the group, such as MTV2.

During the beginning of 2026, programming in the U.S. remained active with non-music content, such as reruns of popular series, a clear sign that the announced closure affects only the international music channels and not the entire MTV brand.

This means that MTV is still available, although it no longer fulfills the role it had for decades as the main window to discover music through television.

Why did MTV make this decision?

The closure of these channels is part of a broader restructuring of Paramount Global, the company that owns MTV.

These adjustments relate to the announced merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, a transaction valued at approximately US$8.4 billion, which is still subject to regulatory approvals.

In recent years, Paramount has implemented cutbacks and reorganizations to adapt to new consumption habits, marked by streaming, social networks and platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Spotify, where video clips and music content now have a dominant presence.

The end of an era… or a transformation?

For millions of people – including much of the Latino community – MTV was for decades a cultural reference: from the rise of pop and rock to the explosion of hip-hop and Latin music.

However, the closure of its traditional music channels confirms a clear trend: linear television is no longer the main space for music consumption.

Although these channels are disappearing in several countries, the MTV brand is not extinct.

His legacy lives on in digital platforms, historical archives and in the collective memory of several generations.

Rather than a final farewell, the closure marks the end of a key stage in the history of music television and reflects how the way audiences – especially younger audiences – discover and consume music has changed in 2025.
