Mexican singer Natanael Cano, considered a pioneer of the corridos tumbados genre, surprised his followers with the release of his new album entitled Porque La Demora, a project with which he temporarily distances himself from the style that made him famous to delve into the urban sounds of trap, reggaeton and afrobeat.

This new album, composed of 16 unreleased songs, represents an important artistic turn in the career of the young native of Hermosillo, Sonora. Although he does not completely abandon his roots, Cano decided not to include any corrido tumbado in this production, thus marking a conscious pause in the genre that catapulted him to success since his debut in 2019.

New mergers and major collaborations

Porque La Demora was recorded mostly in Mexico, under the production of prominent names such as Edgar Barrera, multiple Latin Grammy winner and recognized for his work with artists such as Maluma, Grupo Frontera and Shakira.

The album is distinguished by a diverse musical proposal, where experimentation is the protagonist.

Highlights include “Como Tony”, a collaboration with Puerto Rican rapper Eladio Carrión, which mixes hip-hop with references to the drug trafficking culture popular in the urban genre.

Another highlight is “El Juez”, featuring Myke Towers, accompanied by emerging artist Ganggy, in a track loaded with dense beats and challenging lyrics.

Although the album is strongly committed to the international aesthetics of trap, Cano does not forget his origins.

In the song “Perlas Negras”, he collaborates with Gabito Ballesteros, another representative of the new wave of regional Mexican music, to fuse elements of Afrobeat with melodies that preserve the essence of norteño music.

According to the official press release from his record label, this project shows a more introspective Nathanael.

Because La Demora is, in his own words, a “response to those who doubted” and a way of “demonstrating that his talent does not depend on a single genre”.

This artistic evolution comes two years after his previous album, Nata Montana (2023), with which Cano received his first Latin Grammy nomination in the category of Best Mexican Music Album.

It was the first time an album of corridos tumbados was recognized by the Latin Recording Academy, marking a milestone for the movement that today represents an entire generation.

The new album is now available on all digital platforms.

As for his live presence, Cano is preparing to perform on August 8 at the Baja Beach Fest, one of the most important Latin festivals held in Rosarito, Baja California.

He will share the stage with artists such as Feid, Becky G and Fuerza Regida.

Natanael Cano has not only promoted a new style within Mexican music, but has also been key in the internationalization of regional urban music.

It is a phenomenon that has resonated with young Latinos in the United States who identify with lyrics that blend cultural pride and modern aspirations.

The turn he takes with Porque La Demora proves that Latin artists need not be pigeonholed and that the fusion of genres is a natural part of musical evolution.

For his audience in the U.S., this album is a show of versatility, but also a clear message: the Mexican does not intend to stand still.
