Robert Saleh stepped down as defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers to become the new head coach of the Tennessee Titans for the 2026 NFL season.
Saleh, 46, comes to the Titans after a disastrous 2025 campaign in which they finished with a league-worst three wins and four losses, a mark they shared with the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals. The former Gambusinos’ defensive coordinator will replace Mike McCoy, interim head coach who finished the season after covering for Brian Callahan’s dismissal last October.
Defensive reputation in the NFL
He will be the 20th coach in the history of the former Oilers, who in 1997 moved to Nashville under the name Titans.
Robert Saleh is considered one of the most creative defensive minds in the NFL.
He already had his first head coaching experience with the New York Jets, whom he managed from 2021 to 2024.
He had a record of 20 wins and 36 losses.
Upon his departure from the New York Islanders, the coach returned to San Francisco, where he had previously been from 2017-2020, to take over the defensive backfield.

Despite losing Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, their two stars, to injury, their line was instrumental in helping the 49ers qualify for the playoffs.

Robert Saleh will look to leverage the talents of Cam Ward, a 23-year-old quarterback who was drafted in the first round of last year’s draft.
And that in his rookie season he passed for 3,169 yards and 15 touchdowns and suffered seven interceptions.
The defensive zone will be a tough job, since in that department the Titans ranked 28th in points allowed per game.
The primary mission of head coach Robert Saleh, a Dearborn, Michigan native, will be to rebuild a franchise that has gone four seasons without qualifying for the playoffs.
