Nick Reiner, accused in the murder of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was in treatment when the tragedy occurred last Sunday in an affluent Los Angeles neighborhood, NBC reported Friday.

Three sources with direct knowledge of the case confirmed to the television station that Nick Reiner, 32, was receiving treatment for schizophrenia at the time of his parents’ murder.

The filmmaker’s son was diagnosed with the mental illness years ago and was being treated with medication, sources detailed to the investigative unit of NBC4, the Los Angeles affiliate of NBC.

In addition, they advised that the medication Nick Reiner was taking was adjusted prior to the murders, but no precise date was given about the change and details of the prescription.

For years, the young man struggled with an addiction to drugs and alcohol, which inspired a film co-written and directed by his father.

This Friday, it was also learned that the judge overseeing the case signed a medical order that could be related to her mental health condition and the treatment she was receiving, according to NBC.

Nick Riener was arrested Sunday night after one of his sisters found his parents lifeless at their home in the Brentwood neighborhood.

Security cameras captured him moments before his arrest at a convenience store, where he bought a drink. The images also showed that he did not resist arrest.

Investigations are focused on establishing the motives that could have led him to commit the alleged crime. Relatives claim that there was a family argument at a Christmas party at the home of comedian Conan O’Brien.

This Wednesday, Nick Reiner appeared at a hearing where he was charged with three counts related to the death of his parents, which could carry up to the death penalty, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said.

A hearing in the case is scheduled for January 7, but could be postponed.

The young man is being held without bail in a Los Angeles jail under special surveillance to prevent a suicide, reported Agencia EFE.
