Two of filmmaker Rob and Michele Reiner’s three children, Jake and Romy Reiner, expressed their “unimaginable grief” Wednesday in a first public statement issued following the murder of their parents last Sunday.
“Words cannot describe the unimaginable pain we feel at every moment. The terrible and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience. They were not just our parents; they were our best friends,” they said in a statement shared with TMZ.
The Reiner children were grateful for the expressions of condolences, kindness and support received “not only from family and friends, but from people from all walks of life.”
“We ask for respect and privacy, that speculation be tempered with compassion and humanity, and that our parents be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave,” the statement said.
The letter was released on the same day that another of the sons, Nick Reiner, 32, made his first appearance before a Los Angeles judge following his arrest last Sunday as the prime suspect in the murder of his parents.
Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder that could carry a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office said.
For the moment, the motives that could have led him to commit the alleged crime are unknown, although some people say that there was a family argument at a Christmas party on Saturday night at the home of comedian Conan O’Brien.
Director and actor Rob Reiner, 78, known for his work in films such as ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ was found stabbed to death Sunday afternoon at his Los Angeles home with his wife, producer and photographer Michele Reiner, 70.
The couple was found by their daughter, who arrived at the house after a masseuse called to let her know her parents were not answering the door, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Nick Reiner checked into a Santa Monica hotel on Sunday after the killings, according to a law enforcement source who spoke on condition of anonymity picked up by the U.S. media outlet.
