ICE resignation: key official behind Trump’s massive deportations falls

Deaths in custody generate pressure

The acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Todd Lyons, submitted his letter of resignation to the new Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, on Thursday, April 16, after having been in charge of overseeing the mass deportation plan of President Donald Trump’s Administration.

Lyons’ decision was advanced by the head of Homeland Security in a statement in which he referred to the ICE chief as “a great leader.”

Pressure on ICE grows: resignation follows congressional hearing

Markwayne Mullin added that Todd Lyons will officially leave his position on May 31, 2026, at the end of the U.S. spring.

Hours before his resignation became known, Lyons testified before a House Appropriations subcommittee.

Where he responded to questions from lawmakers about the unprecedented number of deaths in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE.

And the agency’s future plans for detention space, among other topics.

Raids, complaints and leadership vacuum

Lyons was in charge of ICE during the massive raids ordered by then-Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.

Where different human rights organizations reported multiple violations.

In January, two U.S. citizens were shot and killed by immigration agents in Minneapolis.

With Lyons’ departure, the position to lead the agency is vacant.
