The KPop universe Demon Hunters, the animated film that combined music, action and mythology with futuristic aesthetics, will have an official sequel. As confirmed by Bloomberg, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have closed a deal to develop the second part of this unexpected cultural phenomenon, which is scheduled for release in 2029, four years after the original release.
Although the date could be modified depending on production timelines, the news has generated a wave of excitement among the millions of fans who turned the first installment into one of the biggest hits in streaming history.
Released directly on Netflix as part of a distribution deal with Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters quickly became the most-watched animated film in the platform’s history, surpassing marks previously achieved by titles such as. The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Vivo.
The film tells the story of a group of female K-pop stars who, between tours and rehearsals, must confront demonic forces that threaten the world, using music as their main weapon of combat. The visual and narrative proposal -a fusion of science fiction, fantasy and South Korean pop culture- managed to connect with global audiences, especially among teenagers and young adults.
Its mix of spectacular choreography, supernatural action and messages about unity, friendship and the transformative power of art made it an instant hit.

The soundtrack: from streaming to Billboard
One of the pillars of KPop Demon Hunters ‘ impact was its original soundtrack, produced by a team of Korean and American composers. Tracks such as “Golden,” “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop” stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks, cementing the phenomenon beyond the movies.
The musical success was such that several of the songs began circulating on TikTok and Spotify as youth empowerment anthems. Industry experts estimate that the soundtrack could garner nominations at the upcoming Grammy Awards, a rare feat for an animated production.
In light of the film’s success, Netflix organized a sing-along version in selected theaters during August and October, something unusual in its distribution strategy. The initiative proved a resounding success: it grossed close to $18 million in its first weekend and added another $6 million during its re-release on Halloween, impressive figures considering the title was already available on streaming.

K-Pop Demon Hunters: An Expanding Narrative Universe
The confirmation of the sequel responds to the desire of both fans and its creators to expand the universe of the story. Co-director Maggie Kang, who co-directed with Chris Appelhans, had stated in interviews her intention to continue the project.
“We left a lot of room to explore the origins of the main characters and the world around them,” Kang told Variety in July 2024. “We only had 85 minutes to tell a story that deserved more depth, and we knew there was a lot to discover.”
Kang, known for her work on The Lego Ninjago Movie, said the sequel will maintain the message of female empowerment, friendship and artistic resilience that defined the first installment.
Neither Netflix nor Sony Pictures Animation have revealed details about the plot, nor have they confirmed whether the original voice cast will return. However, the new installment is expected to retain the vibrant, colorful and emotional tone that characterized the first film, with a visual evolution in line with technological advances in digital animation.
The production is currently in early development, and several sources close to Sony claim that an expanded cinematic universe is in the works, with possible spin-offs and spin-off products, including comics, animated series and a merchandising line.
The return of KPop Demon Hunters confirms the global rise of K-pop as a cultural phenomenon and its growing influence on the entertainment industry. Its combination of Asian identity, contemporary storytelling and audiovisual spectacle has redefined the concept of modern musical animation.
With this sequel on the way, Netflix and Sony are betting on repeating the success of a formula that united millions of viewers under the same rhythm: that of music, fantasy and the strength of the new generations.
