Mikel Arriola, commissioner of the Mexican Soccer Federation(FMF), announced on Thursday, October 16, that the Portugal national team will face El Tri at the reopening of the Azteca Stadium on March 28.

“We know that Portugal is finishing its classification, technical details are missing, but yes. Everything is almost closed for Portugal for the reopening of the Azteca Stadium,” he announced.

Arriola added that it is very likely that Cristiano Ronaldo will be at the Mexico vs Portugal match.

“It’s part of the contract,” the commissioner stated.

He clarified that the confirmation of the player’s presence will depend on his physical condition.

“If Cristiano is fit, he will play,” he said.

The 2026 World Cup will be inaugurated at the Azteca Stadium on June 11.

The executive added that coach Javier ‘el Vasco’ Aguirre has requested preparation matches in Central America “to subject the players to adverse and extreme conditions”.

In recent friendly matches, El Tri was thrashed 0-4 by Colombia last Saturday and drew 1-1 with Ecuador on Tuesday.

In response to the criticism of the team and the coach, Arriola expressed his full support in explaining his reasons.

“In first conclusion, I say there is a group. Second, there is a plan. And thirdly, there is a leader called Javier Aguirre”.

Mexico’s next preparation matches before Portugal will be against Uruguay on November 15 and Paraguay on November 18.

Portugal firmly on course for 2026

Portugal leads Group F of the European qualifiers thanks to resounding victories (such as the 5-0 win over Armenia).

In the most recent match, they missed out on a direct ticket to the World Cup with a 2-2 draw against Hungary, despite coming from behind with a Cristiano Ronaldo brace.

With 10 points in 4 games, it maintains its lead over its pursuers.

Under the guidance of Roberto Martinez, Portugal combines youth and experience, and is confidently aiming for the 2026 World Cup.
