Ricky Martin became the first winner of the “Latin Icon Award” at the MTV Video Music Awards 2025, a gala held this Sunday, September 7, at the UBS Arena in New York City and hosted by LL Cool J.

The new award celebrates Latino careers that transcended generations and borders. In his speech, Martin thanked the audience and dedicated the award to his four children; he remarked that he is “addicted to their applause” and that he returns to the stage for his people around the world.

The award was presented to Jessica Simpson, who recalled opening for Martin on his Livin’ La Vida Loca tour in 1999; the moment underscored the Puerto Rican’s pioneering role in the great Latin crossover of the late ’90s.

Before the speech, Ricky lit up the Ashe with a medley of hits – including “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” “Pégate” and “Maria” – in a high-voltage set.

Previous days, specialized media had already advanced that Jamie King (historical creative director of pop tours) was collaborating with Martin for the VMAs number.

The Latin Icon Award recognizes a career that opened doors for Latin artists in the mainstream (just remember that in 1999 Martin was the first Latin artist to be nominated for Video of the Year).

Tonight’s milestone comes in an edition that also awarded Mariah Carey with the Video Vanguard and premiered the Rock the Bells Visionary Award for Busta Rhymes, showing a balance between legacy and present.

In the U.S., the ceremony aired on MTV and CBS and airs on Paramount+, with replays and official clips throughout the week. If you missed it live, look for the VMAs section in your Paramount+ app or on MTV’s site, and check your TV provider for on-demand.
