There are beautiful places and then there is San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Walking through its streets is to feel like you are inside an oil painting, but with designer stores, world-class boutique hotels and a gastronomic offer that competes with the great capitals.

In this 2026, San Miguel continues to reign as the favorite destination for “relaxed luxury” tourism. Here you don’t come to run around; you come to pamper yourself. Why is the whole world (and Hollywood) obsessed with this corner of Guanajuato? Here we tell you.

The perfect postcard: The parish

Everything revolves around the Parish of San Miguel Arcángel.

The icon: That pink neo-Gothic church that looks like a giant wedding cake. No matter how many times you see it, it always impresses.

The plan: Sit on a bench in the Jardín Principal (the main square), buy an esquite or a tuna ice cream and just watch life go by. You’ll hear the mariachis, see the “mojigangas” (giant puppets) dancing and feel the true heart of Mexico.

Life in the Heights: The Rooftop Culture

San Miguel is experienced from above. The golden rule here is: if you’re going to have a drink, make sure it’s on a terrace.

Sunset: Around 6:00 PM, everyone goes up to the rooftops (like the one at the Rosewood or Quince hotel ). The view of the orange-tinted city with the illuminated parish in the background is possibly the best urban view in the entire country. Order a glass of local white wine or a signature mezcal.

Art and design: La Aurora factory

If you like art, this is Disneyland.

What is it? An old textile factory converted into an art and design center. The old looms coexist with modern art galleries, luxury furniture stores and designer jewelry stores. It is the ideal place to buy that unique piece that will decorate your living room.

Sleeping like royalty

San Miguel invented the boutique hotel concept in Mexico.

The experience: Here you don’t stay in generic buildings. You stay in restored 18th century mansions with lavender-filled courtyards, stone fountains and Egyptian thread linens. The service is impeccable and personalized.

Style and survival tips

No heels: This is serious. The streets are cobblestone and very uneven. If you wear stilettos, you will sprain your ankle in 5 minutes. Wear chic tennis shoes, boots or platform sandals.

How to get there: The easiest way is to fly to the León/Bajío (BJX) or Querétaro (QRO) airport and take a one-hour shuttle.

Budget: San Miguel is not cheap. Be prepared for prices similar to tourist areas in the US, but the quality is totally worth it.

San Miguel de Allende is romantic, historic and absolutely irresistible.
