Satcha Pretto, Honduran journalist and one of Univision’s most beloved figures, has established herself for years as a credible, impartial and professional face on U.S. Hispanic television.
Every morning she informs millions of households through the program Despierta América, where she combines objectivity with a special sensitivity to issues that impact the community.
However, even the most experienced communicators cannot avoid being personally affected by certain news.
That’s precisely what happened this Wednesday, when Pretto had to report live on a new school shooting in Minneapolis, a city where she herself has lived part of her life and knows closely.
While recounting the first images coming from the scene, the journalist could not hold back her tears. On the screen were scenes of students embracing each other in confusion and fear.
With her voice cracking, she said, “We are really moved by these images of these little girls hugging each other… As a mom it hurts us that these types of incidents happen because every day we send our children to school thinking they are going to be fine and unfortunately we are now with this breaking news.”
The moment showed a deeply human Satcha, who as a mother of two children, Bruce and Alana, identified with the pain of the affected families.
Satcha Pretto and her message from the heart

After apologizing to viewers for letting her emotions show, Pretto underscored the unfairness of children having to face this type of situation in spaces that should be safe: “It’s really unfair that kids go to school and have to face this.
The journalist also recalled recent studies that indicate that a large part of the new generations in the United States, at some point in their lives, will witness a shooting, whether in a school, in a shopping mall or in a public space.
In his report, Pretto explained that details about the identity of the attacker and his motivations were still unknown.
He noted that authorities were already on the scene to clarify whether it was a student, a school staff member or even a parent.
His journalistic commitment was evident by providing the information confirmed up to that moment, while showing empathy with the victims.
What happened with Satcha Pretto transcended the newscast and generated widespread support on social networks, where hundreds of viewers highlighted her sensitivity and courage to show emotions in such a painful subject.
