The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, conveyed on social networks his deep sadness for the death of Colombian senator and presidential aspirant Miguel Uribe Turbay, victim of an attack that occurred two months ago.
Through his X account, Rubio said: “Very saddened to learn of the tragic death of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay. The United States stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, and demands with them justice for those responsible”.
The attack that kept Miguel Uribe Turbay in coma
Uribe Turbay, 39, was shot several times during a political rally on June 7, 2025 in the Modelia neighborhood of Bogotá.
A teenager of approximately 14 years of age, allegedly hired by a drug trafficker, was captured at the site.
The senator was immediately transferred to the Santa Fe Foundation, where he remained in critical condition for two months, until he died in the early hours of August 11 due to a hemorrhage in the central nervous system.
Six people have been arrested in connection with the attack, including an alleged mastermind nicknamed “El Costeño”.
A political legacy punctuated by family tragedy
Miguel Uribe was the grandson of former Liberal president Julio César Turbay and his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was murdered in 1991 by the Medellín cartel after a failed kidnapping.
His death revives the wounds of that violent period in Colombia.
During his career, Uribe has served as councilman of Bogotá, secretary of government in the Peñalosa administration and senator since 2022.
He was emerging as an emerging figure to represent the Colombian right wing in the 2026 elections.
