The Seattle Mariners struck an authoritative blow in the opener of the 2025 American League Championship Series with a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre, a result few expected at the start of the season.
The duel marked the first step in the fight for a ticket to the Major League World Series, and the team led by Scott Servais took full advantage of its offensive opportunities and outstanding pitching to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Difficult start and timely recovery

The home side got off to a strong start thanks to George Springer, who hit a solo home run off starter Bryce Miller’s first pitch, igniting the hopes of the Canadian fans.
However, the Mariners kept their cool and responded in the sixth inning.
Catcher Cal Raleigh tied the score with a solo home run, punishing a low splitter by Toronto starter Kevin Gausman, who had pitched with authority up to that point.
The decisive turn also came in the sixth inning, when Jorge Polanco hit a single to drive in Julio Rodríguez from second base, turning the game around.
In the eighth, Cuban Randy Arozarena scored the third run after another Polanco hit, consolidating the visitors’ victory.

Right-hander Bryce Miller (1-0) was key from the mound, pitching six quality innings in which he allowed only two hits, gave up three walks and struck out three.
The Mariners’ bullpen also responded:
Gabe Speier and Matt Brash kept the Canadian offense at bay, and Mexico’s Andrés Muñoz retired the last three batters, earning his second save of the postseason.
On the Toronto side, Gausman (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings despite striking out five.
What’s next
The series will continue Monday at the Rogers Centre, where the Blue Jays will look to tie it up before traveling to Seattle for Game 3.
The Mariners, meanwhile, will try to keep the momentum going and move closer to their first World Series since 2001.
